The jagged tors or granite outcrops of Rough Tor (pronounced “Row-ter”) and Brown Willy mark the high point of Bodmin Moor, “a silent, desolate country, vast and untouched by human hand”, as Daphne du Maurier remarks of North Cornwall’s lonely moor. It’s on Rough Tor that her demonic villain, the albino vicar and smuggler Francis Davey, meets his death at the climax of Jamaica Inn;
